Torino and Carpi played out a 0-0 stalemate at the Stadio Olimpico di Torino.
The away side were not made to pay for failing to register a single effort on goal, as the heroics of goalkeeper Vid Belec – including a penalty save on Maxi Lopez – was enough to earn the minnows a valuable point.
The first chance of the match did fall to Carpi when Antonio Di Gaudio rode a challenge into the box, the Italian’s ensuing mishit nearly turned in at the far post by Jerry Mbakogu.
Torino responded minutes later when a fierce Bruno Peres cross found the head of Andrea Belotti at the near post but goalkeeper Belec got down well to save.
A half-hour into the match, Emiliano Moretti released Ciro Immobile with an accurate long ball but after some good work making space for himself, his powerful tight-angled effort was beaten away.
Just before the interval, Daniele Baselli was able to dance around four Carpi defenders in what seemed like slow motion but the standout performer of the first half snapped his shot harmlessly wide.
At the hour mark, a poor defensive clearance saw the ball fall to Baselli but the midfielder ballooned over with the net gaping.
Minutes later, some good team play resulted in a Belotti effort that finished straight at Belec.
Torino were awarded a penalty in the 76th minute when Riccardo Gagliolo was late in his tackle on Belotti. Substitute Lopez stepped up but Belec guessed correctly and beat the spot kick away.
In the 84th minute another poor Carpi clearance came right to Immobile but the striker smashed his effort well over the bar.
The remainder of the match was played without incident as the home side were serenated with a chorus of jeers in the closing stages.
Despite failing to pick up the victory, the point brings Torino into sole position of 11th place while Carpi remain in the 19th spot, five points back of safety.
