Transfer Talk: Man United target Alderweireld

Published on: 14 February 2018

Clubs are slowly turning their eyes toward the summer window, and Transfer Talk has the updates on all the latest rumours.

United interested in Spurs' Alderweireld

Only a day after it emerged that Manchester United are poised to revamp their defence, the name of another potential arrival has entered the equation.

Reports on Monday said Jose Mourinho wants to shake up his options and both Chris Smalling and Phil Jones could leave as a new centre-back or two comes in.

Now the Manchester Evening News says Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld "is understood to be interesting United."

Talks over a new Spurs contract have dragged and the Belgium international has been linked with Manchester City, Chelsea and Real Madrid amid reports that his current deal has a £25 million release clause that can be activated next summer.

Centre-back Alderweireld did not travel with the Spurs squad to Juventus despite saying he was ready after three-months out with a hamstring injury, but manager Mauricio Pochettino said the Londoners were protecting him.

United have also been linked with Leicester's Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane of Real Madrid.

Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele has become the latest Premier League star to be targeted by a Chinese Super League club, according to the Sun.

It reports that Beijing Sinobo Guoan are "prepared to pay Dembele £160,000-a-week -- at least double his current wages at Spurs" to tempt him, adding that sources in China believe a deal could be struck "before the Chinese transfer window closes on Feb. 28."

Belgium international Dembele, linked with a move to AC Milan during the January window, has been in impressive form but has only 18 months left on his current Tottenham deal.

However, the paper says Beijing Sinobo Guoan could end up frustrated, with Spurs sources "insisting he is not for sale."

Alisson set to become more expensive

Liverpool continue to be linked with Roma goalkeeper Alisson Becker -- but signing him could soon be a vastly more costly prospect, TalkSPORT reports.

It adds that Roma want to increase the Brazil international's release clause to £80m "to ward off interest from Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid."

Liverpool continue to monitor 25-year-old Alisson, with Jurgen Klopp reportedly remaining unconvinced by either Simon Mignolet or Loris Karius, while Juventus will join the race if Gianluigi Buffon ends his playing days.

But the report says Roma "are working on a new deal for Alisson that would include a hefty release clause but also a significant pay rise to keep him happy."

Tap-ins

- Manchester City could be about to offer more than £22m for Sporting Lisbon striker Rafael Leao, according to the Sun.

It reports that Leao, 18, is also interesting Chelsea after scoring 12 goals in 19 games this season and says Sporting "have already rejected a number of approaches from interested parties."

- Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka made some debut for Newcastle against Manchester United, and the Mirror says they already want to make his move to St James' Park permanent.

Dubravka is on loan from Sparta Prague, but Newcastle can make that full time if they pay £4m in the summer -- which the paper reports "seems likely if they avoid relegation."
