Udinese loan Mensah to Granada again

Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah has been loaned out to newly-promoted Spanish Segunda Division outfit Granada despite interest from several top clubs in Europe.

The 20-year-old, who excelled at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, was in the least tipped to return to his Italian club Udinese.

But he been loaned to to Granada where he spent last season on loan as they played in the third division.

Newcastle United and Lyon were keen on signing the player but Udinese opted to loan him out to the second division club in Spain.

Mensah played three of Ghana’s five games at the 2010 World Cup and was regarded as a key member of the Black Stars squad by coach Milovan Rajevac.

The decision could hurt his chances of playing for the Black Stars as the starting places has recently been reserved for players playing for top clubs in Europe.

With players like John Boye and others getting regular playing time in the off season with their clubs in Europe, their performance when the league starts could affect Mensah’s place in the Black Stars.

Mensah started his career with Ashanti Gold and had a stint with Free State Stars before joining Udinese.

He was also part of the Ghana squad that claimed the U-20 FIFA World Cup in 2009.
