Cristiano Ronaldo breaks silence after Portugal’s win over Uruguay
Former Real Madrid and Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo has described Portugal’s win over Uruguay as a ‘great job’.
Portugal are through to the round of 16 following their comfortable 2-0 win over Uruguay on Monday night.
Bruno Fernandes scored the opener halfway through the second half after his intended cross to Cristiano Ronaldo was too high for Ronaldo to make contact with the ball, as a result obstructing the goalkeeper’s view on the ball.
The 37-year-old was hauled off late in the game as Portugal needed more defenders to defend their narrow lead but they would rather get a penalty after a Uruguay player unintentionally handled the ball inside the penalty box.
Portugal doubled their lead from the penalty spot after Bruno Fernandes sent the goalkeeper the wrong direction and Ronaldo was pleased with the character his country showed against Uruguay.
Speaking to Twitter, the five-time Ballon d’Or said: “We are in the round of 16 of the World Cup! Great job, team! Against an opponent of great merit, we asserted our strength and our quality. Let’s go! We are in the fight and our dream is still alive! Strength, Portugal!”
