In a blow to Chelsea’s already struggling side, their captain Thiago Silva is set to miss six weeks after sustaining knee ligament damage during their 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. The Brazil international, who signed a new one-year contract earlier this month, has been a key figure in the team’s defense this season.

Silva’s absence only adds to Chelsea’s growing list of sidelined players, including Christian Pulisic, N’Golo Kante, Cesar Azpilicueta, Edouard Mendy, and Armando Broja. The London club currently sits in 10th place in the Premier League table, having experienced a disappointing six-match winless run.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Chelsea confirmed the extent of Silva’s injury and stated that he will work closely with the club’s medical department during his rehabilitation process. The statement also expressed the hope that Silva will return to action as soon as possible.

Chelsea said in a statement released on Tuesday: “Having sustained a knee injury during the first half of Sunday’s match against Tottenham Hotspur, Thiago underwent further assessment and a scan on his return to the training centre on Monday.

“Scan results from those assessments have confirmed damage to Thiago’s knee ligaments and he will now work closely with the club’s medical department during his rehabilitation to return to action as soon as possible.”

The injury to Silva is undoubtedly a major setback for Chelsea, particularly as they prepare to take on relegation-threatened Leeds United on Saturday.

The Chelsea’s board under Todd Boehly would understand how difficult managing Chelsea is for  Graham Potter as he has struggled to maintain an healthy squad, and so might give him till the end of the season to fix his squad.

With a host of key players out of action, the team will need to dig deep and find a way to turn their fortunes around in the remaining games of the season.
