Head of Mercedes Toto Wolff commented on the finish of Lewis Hamilton in fifth place after breaking from 19th. British collided with Kevin Magnussen on the first lap, after which he suggested the team get off to conserve engine life.
“You always have to make a decision when you kind of lose a race – whether it’s worth continuing. From the driver’s point of view, ‘It’s impossible, I’m 50 seconds behind.’ But we never give up. In the end, his race temp was respectable. He could have fought for the win.
I’m glad we didn’t have Lewis’s run-off because it was the most valuable race for us in terms of comparing the two cars – their setups and tires.
During the race, we saw a leak on Hamilton’s car and it wasn’t clear if we were going to finish. In the end, we just barely made it to the finish line. I’m not sure if we have damaged the engine or not,” – quotes Wolff Sky Sports.
