Under-graduate wins Michael Essien award

A final year Political Science student Samuel Apraku Frimpong has won the  Michael Essien footballer of the year award for 2011 at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana.

Samuel Apraku Frimpong was adjudged the best footballer at the Sports Awards and Dinner nite event held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science &Technology on Friday 15 April.

The Awards and Dinner nite is held annually to honour distinguished sports personalities on campus, to motivate others to learn from their shining examples in future.

The winner of the Michael Essien Award received a plaque,an undisclosed cash prize and a jersey.

The winner will also be presented at a later date with T90 Nike boots.

The Vice –Chancellor of KNUST Professor Ellis presented the award to the winner.

The event was attended by the Vice –Chancellor of KNUST Professor Ellis, Joseph Adu, Sports Director of KNUST, the Ashanti Regional Sports Development officer and officials of the Sports Directorate.

John Mensah, acting skipper of the Black Stars and Fred Pappoe (Vice President of the Ghana Football association) presented special awards to the Best Football Defender and the Dedicated Sports Personality respectively.

In a speech read on behalf of Michael Essien, he congratulated the winner for his hard work and achievement.

“'I will like all of you to know how proud and thrilled I am to be sponsoring this prestigious award. Education is an important cornerstone of every society however sports is equally crucial in developing a healthy nation therefore it is pleasing to see the University combining both and encouraging students to work and play. It can only boost the student’s well being”.

“As a dedicated sportsman, I know how difficult it is to be competing for such honours; therefore I will like to congratulate the winner for his hard work and dedication. Unfortunately there can be only one winner but all the same each one of you who took part in these games can be proud of combining sports and education at the highest level. It is a great achievement so well done” he concluded.
