A record number of fans watched Manchester United's top of the table clash with Liverpool on Sunday.

The showdown at Anfield had an average of 4.5million viewers and 4.8m viewers in the final five minutes – making it the biggest audience for a game shown only on Sky Sports in Britain.

Sky have since revealed that only Game of Thrones has achieved bigger viewing than fixture which ended in a 0-0 draw.

The viewing figures also eclipse the previous record for a game broadcast on Sky Sports, held by Manchester City and Manchester United in the 2011-12 season.

The Merseyside fixture saw 4.3m people tune in to watch City defeat United 1-0 after a Vincent Kompany header.

Despite having more viewers this time round, Manchester United's recording breaking match against Liverpool ended in a stalemate.

Just five days after taking Liverpool's place as the Premier League leaders, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were hoping to assert their dominance.

However, the Red Devils failed to assert their title credentials by coming up short in front of goal.

Nevertheless, credit must be given to Alisson after he made two vital saves to deny Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba from close range.

Liverpool also failed to find some form of attacking fluidity during Jurgen Klopp's 200th Premier League game.

The result sees Liverpool go three Premier League games in a row without scoring a single goal.

The draw did, however, offer an opportunity for Manchester City to move two points behind Manchester United.

City beat Crystal Palace on Sunday to claim three points and move to second in the table.
