Published on: 22 June 2011

UC Santa Barbara men's soccer star David Opoku has been called up to train with the Ghana-Under 23 national team.

He will get a chance to earn a spot on the squad that plays Nigeria this weekend in the All Africa Games qualifier.

The forward has been training with the team the last week and played in one contest with the team, a 3-2 victory.

Opoku was the 2010 Big West Freshman of the Year after collecting 17 points on the season with 6 goals and 5 assists.

The UCSB men kick off the 2011 season on August 20 against nearby Westmont.

Someone said A college footballer should be called into senior national team? anyway No harm in trying him @ U23. I hope he does well, because we really need young and talented strikers.

You Ghanaians are hypocrite. I have read most of you guys messages before and almost all of you want GFA to go beyond Adam Kwarsey and co. to look for best ghnanaian players abroad before other countries pick them so why are you guys saying that it is wrong to call the guy. The earlier, the better. We have lost some players because we did not call them in our youth teams so lets start now and look for all these young ones out there.

I went to school with this guy. He's a problem. Could literally dribble everyone on the pitch when we didnt pass him the football. He has potential to be great
