Utd transfer round-up: Youngster linked with loan, Eriksen & Upamecano latest

Published on: 24 November 2020

Manchester United picked up an important three points over the weekend, but didn’t look entirely convincing in their victory over West Bromwich Albion.

Bruno Fernandes’ twice-taken penalty gave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side a narrow victory over West Bromwich Albion, helping lift them into the top half of the table.

However, the underwhelming display has once again sparked calls for further investment in the squad during the January transfer window.

We’ve got the latest on potential ins and outs as  Man Utd  attempt to set up for a big few months as they seek a return to the Premier League’s upper reaches.

Southampton keen to revive loan move for Man Utd defender

Brandon Williams has struggled for minutes this season, and Southampton are keen to take the Manchester United youngster to St Mary’s to help him get back to doing what he does best.

The 20-year-old made 17 league appearances in the league last season, but the form of Luke Shaw and the arrival of Alex Telles have meant he has yet to feature in the competition this term.

The Saints attempted to get a loan deal over the line during the summer, with  The Athletic  reporting that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer vetoed a deal, but the same publication names Ralph Hasenhuttl’s club as one of a number of interested parties ahead of the January window.

However, the deadline day signing of Telles, who made his Premier League debut on Saturday, could make the United boss more willing to sanction a January move.

Williams’ only appearances this season have come against Luton Town and Brighton & Hove Albion in the Carabao Cup, though he was an unused substitute against West Bromwich Albion over the weekend.

Upamecano not the only RB Leipzig player on United’s radar

Dayot Upamecano continues to be linked with Manchester United, with the French defender interesting a number of Champions League clubs.

However, it appears the centre-back is not the only member of RB Leipzig’s squad attracting the attention of the Old Trafford recruitment team.

According to pundit and former Premier League striker Jan Aage Fjortoft (via  MEN Sport  ), United are also keen on Marcel Sabitzer if the Austrian midfielder becomes available.

Sabitzer came off the bench as Leipzig lost 5-0 at Old Trafford earlier this season, and scored twice in his team’s elimination of Tottenham from last season’s Champions League.

The 26-year-old also scored his eighth senior international goal in a September victory over Norway in the UEFA Nations League.

Any Eriksen deal unlikely to be a swap, Italian media claim

Christian Eriksen looks likely to be available in January, with the Danish international having struggled to establish himself at Inter Milan.

Arsenal and Chelsea have been mentioned in connection with the former Tottenham midfielder, who joined Antonio Conte’s side in January this year after more than half a decade in north London.

However, according to Corriere dello Sport (via  Sport Witness) , potential suitors have been urged to “watch out for Man United”.

The same publication plays down the prospect of a swap deal involving Eriksen and United midfielder Fred, with the Brazilian having strengthened his hold on a starting spot in the midfield at Old Trafford.

However, Eriksen could still find himself on the move in the new year, having been an unused substitute in each of Inter’s last three games in all competitions.
