Valverde rues Barcelona finale

Published on: 26 May 2019

Head coach Ernesto Valverde admitted that the season had come to a disappointing end for Barcelona after they were beaten 2-1 by Valencia in the Copa del Rey final.

Barca successfully defended their La Liga title this term, but have fallen short in both the Champions League and now the domestic cup competition.

We created such high expectations and we have not been able to live up to them.

They recorded just one win in their final five games in all competitions, including the reverse at the hands of Los Che in Seville on Saturday evening.

However, Valverde remains adamant that he is motivated to try and improve things next season, having admitted to being left with a sense of what might have been this term.

He commented: "A month ago we celebrated the league title and the potential for a treble. We created such high expectations and we have not been able to live up to them.

"We are all upset to lose in the final, but it is better to reach this stage and lose than go out in the quarter-finals.

"I cannot fault the players, they gave everything and I do not think it was a question of mentality, more just that Valencia were the better team on the night.

"When managers lose, we always want to make amends and turn things around."

Meanwhile, Barca are priced at 4/7 to retain their La Liga crown next season, with Real Madrid priced at 6/4 and Atletico Madrid 20/1.
