Van Dijk eyes winning run

Published on: 23 October 2018

Virgil van Dijk insists Liverpool will not be taking victory against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League on Wednesday for granted.

Jurgen Klopp's side, beaten by Real Madrid in last season's final, started this term's European campaign well, beating Paris St-Germain last month, but then suffered a setback in Italy three weeks ago when they lost 1-0 to Napoli.

Red Star, champions of Serbia, needed to get through four rounds just to reach the group stage, and drew 0-0 on home soil with Napoli before crashing to a 6-1 loss to PSG.

Netherlands international van Dijk accepts that Liverpool have not been firing on all cylinders recently and were a little fortunate to beat winless Huddersfield Town 1-0 in the Premier League on Saturday.

The former Celtic and Southampton defender said: "We will need to be 100 per cent and I think we will be.

"Against Huddersfield, we should have done better. Obviously we kept a clean sheet, which is all good, but we could have made it easier for ourselves.

"We need to win every game. There is basically no other mind-set.

"It's another Champions League night at Anfield and I'm sure we will recover from Huddersfield and make sure we are ready."

Liverpool can be backed at 6/1 beat Red Star 2-0 and 1/2 to keep a clean sheet in the match. Van Dijk is available at 9/2 to score at any time in the game.
