VAR DRAMA: Caleb Ekuban breathes sigh of relief after scoring match-winner for Trabzonspor

Trabzonspor frontman Caleb Ekuban has expressed his delight to have his name on the scoresheet in the 2-1 victory against Fatih Karagumruk after his initial strike was denied by VAR.

The Ghana striker believed he had got off the mark for Trabzonspor when he headed home the opener against Fatih Karagumruk  but his celebration was cut short as the assistant referee spotted an offside and his decision was supported by VAR.

The video assistant referee once again raised eyebrows as Ekuban's goal was ruled offside for just keeping his hip ahead of the opposition players.

Initially, in the lines drawn on the screen, the 26-year-old appeared to be in the appropriate position. But the goal was apparently ruled out because Mane’s head was about a millimetre offside.

The former Leeds United poacher however went ahead to score the match-winner for the side in their 2-1 win over newcomers Fatih Karagumruk in the Turkish top-flight at the weekend.

He got his head unto a corner in the 10th minute and sent the ball into the net.

It was his fourth goal in ten league appearances this term.

Just after the break, Anthony Nwakaeme opened the scoring for Trabzonspor on the road.

But Fatih Karagumruk managed to level through Jure Balkovec in the 70th minute.

Speaking after the match, Ekuban said, “Thank goodness that even though one of my goals was canceled, I managed to score the goal that brought the victory. I wanted to entertain my friends in my joy of goals. They are the source of my energy.”
