Vialli: I would’ve retired last season if I were Totti

Published on: 22 February 2016

Former Juventus forward Gianluca Vialli believes that Roma captain Francesco Totti should have retired last year instead of choosing to carry on.

Vialli feels that the situation between Totti and coach Luciano Spalletti was inevitable as it was only a matter of time before the former would voice his unhappiness due to ill-treatment and a perceived lack of playing time.

“I think if I was him [Totti], I would have stopped playing last year,” the 51-year-old told Fox Sports.

“I felt that sooner or later he would voice his unhappiness,”

“It is not fair, however this kind of situation happens naturally and it is sad to see, ”

“Totti is the strongest Italian player of the last 30 years, but it was wrong of him to disrespect Spalletti because beyond Roma, he [Totti] is not as appreciated and respected.”
