Black Stars coach Charles Akonnor sent shock waves across the Ghanaian football fraternity when he asked a journalist whether ‘dropped’ John Boye is his brother or in-law.
On Tuesday, Akonnor named his maiden squad for Ghana’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sudan.
Akonnor surprisingly left out John Boye who is arguably the country’s best guardsman in Europe which sparked controversy amongst journalists who attended the event.
Isaac Asempah, who works with Zylofon FM, asked Akonnor why he omitted Boye from the squad but the former Hearts of Oak gaffer jokingly asked the journalist whether Boye is his brother or his in-law.

A closer look at the John Boye saga below;
Meanwhile, Akonnor handed call-ups to Nuhu Kasim and Nicholas Opoku who have played less games than the former Heart of Lions star.
Kassim and Opoku combined, have played 5 games less than Boye.
From this, clearly, Boye doesn’t need to be somebody’s brother or in-law before he’ll ask an informed question based on facts.
Let’s not simplify the John Boye issue.
Yes, the name JOHN BOYE is one a lot of Ghanaians do not want to hear for an obvious reason. He kissed money in Brazil.
But as a journalist, I don’t think what people think of a player should bar him (Asempah) from asking a legitimate and tenable question.
