South Africa defied the odds to beat Ghana 1-0 at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg in the second FIFA World Cup qualifications match on Monday to topple Group G.

Hugo Broos recorded his first victory as head of the Bafana Bafana since he took over the team.

Bafana Bafana gaffer Hugo Broos made two alterations to the squad that held Zimbabwe to a scoreless stalemate last Friday in the opening game.

The first half of the encounter of an uninspiring one after the two teams produced a very balanced performance.

Ghana attempted only a shot at goal in the entire 45 minutes while the Bafana Bafana made failed to trouble the Black Stars defence despite having four attempts at goal.

Percy Tau found the back of the net with a fine header in the 38th minute following a free-kick but his was effort was ruled for offside.

Evidence Makgopa with the best of opportunities for South Africa just two minutes after the break following a howler by goalkeeper Richard Ofori but he missed the chance with only a yawning net to beat.

Hlongwane came close to getting the opener for the home side as his attempted acrobatic effort in the 68th minute missed the posts by a whisker.

South Africa finally got the breakthrough seven minutes from full-time after the Ghana defence failed to deal with a cross from the right.

Hlongwane took advantage of the lose ball to beat substitute goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi.

Bafana Bafana now lead Group G of the qualifications with 4 points with Ghana dropping to second place.
