Villa to ward off Man Utd transfer interest in Grealish with '£100m price tag'

Aston Villa are set to fend off transfer interest in Jack Grealish by reportedly placing a £100million price tag on their prized asset.

Grealish, 25, was heavily linked with Manchester United last summer after he spearheaded Villa to survival in the Premier League.

But the Red Devils were unwilling to meet Villa's £70million price tag and instead moved for attacking midfielder Donny van de Beek, and wingers Amad Diallo and Facundo Pellistri.

Meanwhile, Grealish's stock has only risen this season thanks to the Englishman's tally of five goals and five assists in the Premier League - making him joint-third in the division for goal involvements.

Villa now rate Grealish at £100million, according to the  Daily Telegraph  , meaning any suitor would need to break the transfer record for a British player - currently held at £85million by Gareth Bale - in order to land him.

The versatile midfielder put pen to paper on a new deal last summer to tie him down at Villa Park until 2025.

"The owners have made it very clear to me how ambitious they are and how they want to build Aston Villa," Grealish said at the time.

"There are exciting times ahead and I am very glad to be part of it.

Villa enjoyed a stunning start to the season with four consecutive wins including a 7-2 thrashing of champions Liverpool.

But their form has since stalled and the club sits 10th in the table with four defeats in their last five matches.

Grealish scored in Villa's most-recent match - the 2-1 defeat at West Ham on Monday - but was also accused of diving at the London Stadium.

"If referees are giving fouls, the reputation [of diving] is unfair," Villa boss Dean Smith said after the match.

"Does he go down easily? You tell me some of the top forwards who don’t go down easy. He was again fouled a number of times against West Ham."

Villa have seen their clash with Newcastle scheduled for Friday postponed due to a "significant" coronavirus outbreak at the Magpies.
