Vinicius Jr set for new Real Madrid contract with €1bn release clause

Published on: 07 November 2021

Real Madrid are expected to set a release clause worth €1bn for Vinicius Junior when they next renew his contract, underlining the Brazilian winger’s importance to the club’s future.

Turning 21 during the summer, Vinicius has been in top form this season and has further established as a key player. Only 31 of his 49 appearances in all competition in 2020/21 were as a starter, compared to 14 starts in Real’s 16 games so far in 2021/22.

Vinicius has also significantly increased his tangible output. The former Flamengo talent, who Real committed to spend €45m on at the tender age of just 16, has 16 goals and assists already this season. He has more than doubled his La Liga goal tally in only a third of the appearances and has also surpassed his final assist tally in the league already.

Adding consistency to his game, which was again on show as Real bet Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, has been a big step forward and makes him an increasingly valuable asset.

As things stand, Vinicius is still under contract at the Bernabeu until 2025. The length of that deal is not an issue, but his higher status ensures the terms of the contract need updating to reflect that.

AS explains that Real intend to hand Vinicius a new six-year contract until 2028 at the end of the season that will both raise his salary and his release clause.

It is said that the new wages on offer will be in the region of €8m per season and put him in the same bracket as players like Marcelo and Isco. Few players at Real earn more, with Luka Modric and Karim Benzema on an estimated €10m and Eden Hazard and Gareth Bale paid €15m.

Vinicius’ current release clause is €700m. Such clauses are a mandatory part of Spanish football contracts and Real make a habit of setting prohibitively high figures for their most prized players to ensure they cannot be easily poached by other clubs.

The new contract is expected to see the clause for Vinicius increased to €1bn, which would be on a par with the new deals Barcelona have recently agreed with Ansu Fati and Pedri.
