The WAFU U-17 tournament began with a bang for host nation Ghana as they secured a convincing 5-1 victory over Ivory Coast on Wednesday afternoon at the University of Ghana Stadium.
Led by captain Benjamin Tsivanyo, Ghana started the game brightly in front of their home crowd, but Ivory Coast managed to gain some control and frustrated the hosts.
It was Ghana who broke the deadlock in the 27th minute, thanks to a goal by Joseph Narbi. Narbi then doubled Ghana's lead just before halftime, giving the home team a comfortable 2-0 advantage going into the break.
After the break, Ghana continued to dominate the game, with Godfred Sarpong extending their lead to 3-0 in the 48th minute. Harve Gbafa then made it 4-0 in the 53rd minute, effectively putting the game out of reach for Ivory Coast.
Despite conceding a consolation goal, Ghana continued to press forward, and Mark Kagawa Mensah scored the team's fifth and final goal in the first minute of stoppage time.
With this impressive victory, Ghana will look to continue their winning ways in their next game against Benin in six days.
