Ghana’s Black Starlets impressed with a top performance on Wednesday afternoon to kick off their campaign in the 2024 WAFU B U17 Championship with a 5-1 victory over Côte d'Ivoire.
The Starlets led by head coach Laryea Kingston outplaced the opponent to cruise to the massive victory in front of the home crowd.
In a game played at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, Joseph Larbi equalized in the 27th minute to give the Black Starlets the lead after a very good team play.
Before halftime, the midfielder scored his second of the match with a low drive to send the Black Starlets into the break with a comfortable lead.
After recess, Côte d'Ivoire continued to fight in a bid to turn things around but it was not meant to be.
The Ivorians managed to net a consolation goal but additional goals from Godfred Sarpong, Herve Gbafa, and Mark Kagawa Mensah propelled the Black Starlets to the big 5-1 win at full-time.
Up next for Ghana, the Starlets will prepare for their second group match against Benin.
