We have to plan rather than prepare for Afcon - Former Ghana defender Sammy Kuffour

Published on: 04 December 2023

In a candid revelation, Sammy Kuffour has emphasized the need for a meticulous plan rather than a rushed preparation for the Afcon.

Kuffour, a stalwart of the game, asserted that the youthful composition of Ghana's squad in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar requires a broader perspective.

With an eye fixed on the future, he advocates for setting sights on the 2026 0r 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) rather than hastily gearing up for the 2023 edition in Ivory Coast.

The former Ghanaian defender, known for his defensive prowess, stressed the significance of nurturing the young talent that represented the country in Qatar.

In his strategic computation, Ghana's best shot at Afcon glory lies not in immediate preparations for 2023 but in a well-thought-out plan tailored to harness the potential of the rising young stars.

Ghana, a four-time winner of Afcon, has endured a prolonged drought in securing the coveted title, stretching beyond 40 years.

"There is a difference between preparation and planning we are always prepared but we don't plan the team we took to the World Cup last year if you look at the team 17 players were under 25," he told Peace FM as monitored by Footballghana.com

"So why are we forcing ourselves that we are going to Ivory Coast to win the Cup we have to think 2026...28 by that time how old will the players be?

"Because we are not planning we prepare there is a difference between planning and preparation so we have to plan well we need planning not preparation,"
