Former Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Osei Boateng says Ghana has failed to learn from the May 9 stadium disaster that claimed 126 lives.
Speaking on the anniversary of the tragedy, Boateng, who was part of the Kotoko team on that fateful day, expressed disappointment over repeated signs of poor officiating and crowd violence at local matches.
“The lessons that we have to learn is paramount for me but we haven’t learnt any lessons from what brought the tragedy. What brought the tragedy referee, hooliganism at stadium this time around the same at venues Vision FC and other stadiums Nsoatreman's incident and other cases," he told Peace FM as monitored by Ghanasoccernet.com
"So the lessons that we have to learn we haven’t learnt anything it is just the same referees everyday still they don’t want to do anything about it. If we are even playing a four nation tournament if referees and supporters don’t change our attitude about the game nothing better will happen,”
The May 9 disaster happened in 2001 during a league match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium.
