Ghana's No. 1

Werner transfer alternatives Liverpool should consider in the summer window

Published on: 26 March 2020

Timo Werner has been heavily linked with a summer move to Liverpool from RB Leipzig but if the deal was unable to be completed, there are other alternatives for Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp has one of the most devastating front-three combinations in Europe, with Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

However, squad depth can never be too much and as Liverpool look to improve in any way possible, Werner has been rumoured to be a target for Klopp.

Here are three more alternatives for Klopp if he did wish to bolster his attacking options at Anfield.

Ciro Immobile

The striker has become one of Europe's most lethal strikers in his time at Lazio so far and shows no signs of easing up in front of goal.

Immobile has scored 27 goals in Serie A this season, scoring 16 last season, 27 the season before and 23 in the 2016/17 campaign for Lazio.

The 30-year-old is not blessed with the speed of Werner, but his finishing is sublime and with the pace of Mane and Salah either side of him, it could be an explosive trio.

Immobile also has the highest number of pressing duels attempted out of the three, and Werner, with 178 this season, which is the sort of player that does attract Klopp.

The only sticking point is Klopp has worked with Immobile before, making him his record signing at Dortmund, and it didn't go too well.

Josip Ilicic

The Atalanta striker has scored 15 goals in Serie A so far this campaign and really caught the eye in a recent Champions League game.

Ilicic netted four times in an unbelievable match that saw Atalanta beat Valencia 8-4 on aggregate to progress into the Champions League quarter-finals.

During the game, the Slovenian striker demonstrated his variety of finishing, also scoring once in the first leg.

Out of the three alternatives, Ilicic has the most dribbles completed this season with 127 and also the most attacking duels won with 194.

Wissam Ben Yedder

The Monaco striker has scored 18 goals this season in his first season back in his homeland of France.

Ben Yedder, similarly to Firmino, is a defender from the front and has the most defensive actions successful out of the four spoken about strikers.

Likewise, the 29-year-old has made 65 ball recoveries so far this season for Monaco, more than Immobile, Ilicic and Werner.

On average over 90 minutes, Immobile has the best goalscoring rate with 1.05 goals per game, whilst Ben Yedder has the worst with 0.71.

Ilicic completes the most dribbles per 90 minutes over the season with the Atalanta striker recording a score of 7.31 successful take-ons per game.

However, Ilicic, 32, is the oldest out of the three alternative strikers, with his market value sure to be a concern for the Reds.

That's why it does make sense to sign Werner, who is just 21, but these are three other alternatives in case the negotiations do not happen with the Bundesliga team.
