West Brom make shock offer for Derek Boateng

English Premier League side West Brom have  made a shock US$5m bid for Ghanaian midfielder Derek Boateng.

Boateng, who plays for Spanish top flight side Getafe, was voted the best player by the club's fans at the end of last season.

The midfielder was part of the Black Stars at the World Cup in South Africa in June but his performances with Getafe is what has attracted West Brom.

And Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo has made his move after missing out on his prime target, Ivorian midfielder Cheick Tiote, who has moved to Newcastle.

West Brom were tracking 27-year-old Boateng earlier in the summer.

But Di Matteo is desperate to push through a deal before Sunday’s game with Liverpool.

And he is confident of concluding the transfer, even though Getafe are likely to want closer to US$6m for the combative midfielder, who has also played in Germany.
