Former Ghana international Samuel Osei Kuffour has hit back at Jamie Carragher's criticism of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), emphasising the significant impact African players have made in the Premier League.
Kuffour, a UEFA Champions League winner with Bayern Munich, expressed his disappointment at Carragher's comments, stating, "Carragher should be ashamed of himself... He doesn't respect us."
The former AS Roma centre-back pointed out the impressive performances of African players in the Premier League, questioning Carragher's own achievements.
"Did he win the Premier League during his time?" Kuffour asked.
Kuffour, who earned 54 caps for Ghana between 1993 and 2006, also reflected on his own regret at not winning the AFCON title.
"Some of us, including me, never got the chance to win the AFCON. It kills me every day because there is nothing that I can show to my children."
He acknowledged the competitiveness of the AFCON, highlighting the strength, technique, and understanding of the game among African teams.
"You can never underrate Ghana, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, and Nigeria whenever they play each other," Kuffour said.
