What happened to the three players signed by David Moyes at Man Utd

Published on: 10 April 2020

David Moyes spent just 10 months in charge of Manchester United.

Three players arrived at Old Trafford during this time - along with Wilfried Zaha, who signed in January from Crystal Palace under Sir Alex Ferguson but was loaned back to Selhurst Park - we take a look at where they are now.

Marouane Fellaini

The Belgian midfielder scored decisive semi-final goals in each of United's last three trophies - the 2016 FA Cup against his former club Everton, against Hull City in the EFL Cup the following year and against Celta Vigo in the Europa League the same season.

Each of his last three goals for the club, before joining Chinese club Shandong Luneng in January 2019, arrived in the last-minute. That run included a winner against Arsenal and also the goal - against Young Boys - that ensured United qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League for the first time since Moyes's spell at the club.

Moyes landed his former Everton stalwart in a £27.5million deal in his first summer at the helm after a summer of indecisiveness.

Always a reliable performer who offered a notable goal threat - particularly under Jose Mourinho - Fellaini helped his nation to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and remains in the Chinese Super League.

Saidy Janko

Like Fellaini, Janko arrived at United on transfer deadline day in summer 2013. He joined from FC Zürich and he was voted the Reserve Player of the Year that year. His one outing for the club was at the infamous 4-0 humbling at Milton Keynes Dons in the League Cup in August 2014 - replaced by Andreas Pereira at half-time.

Janko joined Championship club Bolton Wanderers on loan for the rest of the season in February before moving to Celtic permanently that summer. He had subsequent stints at Barnsley, Saint-Etienne and Nottingham Forest, while he is currently out on loan at Young Boys from FC Porto.

Juan Mata

The most expensive, high-profile and successful of the Moyes arrivals remains a part of United's first-team squad six years after joining. The Reds committed to a then club record fee of £37.1million to land the Spanish playmaker from Chelsea.

Mata has gone on to make 249 appearances for United, scoring 48 goals. He has played a key role in helping the club land the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League trophies during his time at the club, but a sustained league title challenge has proved elusive in that timeframe.

In August 2017, Mata pledged that one per cent of his salary would go to a pledge-based charitable movement, named Common Goal, and called for other football players to do the same.

The former Valencia playmaker's current deal at the club runs through until the summer of 2021 and was penned a year ago.
