Which MLS team could Messi join?

Published on: 28 December 2020

Lionel Messi's future is up in the air, with the Argentine forward giving little away as to his plans for the months and years to come, but he has dropped a big hint that he would like to play in MLS one day.

Barcelona's No.10 has said that he sees himself being a part of the club after his retirement and plans to live in the city long term, but he has left the door open to an overseas adventure before then.

"I've always said I would like to experience the league in the United States, but that's not for now," said Messi.

Messi, who was speaking to Jordi Evole on LaSexta, didn't put any timeframe on that wish and nor did he enter into details on any preferred destinations, but there are a number of options which could be appealing to him and his family.

Inter Miami and David Beckham

The MLS newcomers could be an ideal destination, with Miami having lots of Spanish speakers, Florida having an inviting climate and the assurances of quality that come with the involvement of David Beckham.

Inter Miami have wasted no time in investing in the playing squad, recruiting the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Blaise Matuidi and Rodolfo Pizarro.

Messi could fit in well with these players, while providing the organisation with the blockbuster signing they have been craving.

New York City and their relationship with Guardiola's Manchester City

Messi's short-term future has been heavily linked with Manchester City, not least of all because of a potential reunion with Pep Guardiola, so it is only natural to wonder if that might eventually lead to him joining New York City, who belong to the City Football Group.

If he went to New York City, Messi could follow in the footsteps of former teammate David Villa, who was the franchise's poster star in their first seasons.

Los Angeles Galaxy and their history

If there is one MLS team with a particular history of bringing the biggest names in the game to the USA, it is LA Galaxy.

In joining the Galaxy, Messi would be following the likes of David Beckham, Ashley Cole, Landon Donovan, Steven Gerrard, Robbie Keane, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and, most recently, Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez.

With that comes the peace of mind that the LA team knows how to treat its star players and give them a comfortable lifestyle, as well as the allure of joining a successful organisation.
