World Cup 2010: Controversial Portuguese referee for Ghana-Uruguay clash

Published on: 02 July 2010

Fifa has appointed controversial Olegario Benquerenca of Portugal to referee Ghana's quarter-final clash against Uruguay at the World Cup on Friday.

The game  at Johannesburg’s Soccer City be will the 41-year-old referee’s third official match at the tournament.

Benquerenca would be assisted by Jose Cardinal and Bertino Miranda on the lines.

Benquerenca courted controversy in April when Barcelona players accused him of bias towards Inter Milan which was coached by Jose Mourinho who is Portuguese.

There was bad feeling at San Siro in the first leg last week, when Inter won 3-1, as the Barcelona midfielder Xavi confronted Mourinho in the tunnel after the game and, after the Italian side's third goal had looked offside, accused the Portuguese referee Olegario Benquerenca of bias towards his compatriot.

Ghana can make history by beating Uruguay to eclipse Cameroon's exploits in 1990 and Senegal in 2002 and become the first African side in the last four.
