World Cup 2010: Ghana coach reveals Appiah's roles

Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac has revealed that captain Stephen Appiah will play two key roles for the Black Stars at the world Cup from next week.

The Serbian boss says the Bologna player apart from his action on field, the enforcer is expected to give the team direction during the tournament in South Africa.

Appiah managed just two games for Serie A struggler Bologna, which he joined in October after 20 months in limbo following his departure from Turkish-based Fenerbahce in February 2008.

Despite doubts over his Appiah's fitness, Rajevac says his captain is improving and will be expected to play some key roles in the first World Cup to be hled in Africa.

"Stephen is the captain of the team and his presence is important for the team, his charisma, and character," Rajevac said.

"Although he does not play much for his team of late, he's started recently and he's picking up slowly. He's important as a captain.

"It's always important to have players with experience, and of course you need players who are young and fit and can run a lot.

"Some players you just need them to be there to keep everything under control as leaders.''

Appiah's lack of match conditioning further weakens a midfield already missing Essien's class and versatility.

"It's a big loss for our team but it's also a big loss for the World Cup,'' Rajevac said of Essien's absence.

"It is best for everybody to see the best players in the world. Michael is one of the best players in his position, so of course it's a big blow.

"We are missing him as a player and also as a person, with his character and everything."

Ghana will play Serbian Australia and Germany in Group D of the tournament.
