World Cup 2010: Kevin Prince Boateng makes Ghana debut

Published on: 05 June 2010

German-born midfielder Kevin Prince Boateng made his debut for Ghana when they played Latvia in a World Cup warm-up on Saturday.

Boateng, who recently snubbed his country of birth to play for his father’s country, started for the Black Stars in the game in Milton Keynes.

This is his first match in a Black Stars shirt, one month after Fifa approved his nationality switch.

His switch to play for Ghana has generated a lot of excitement in the wake of his tackle on Germany captain Michael Ballack that ruled him out of the World Cup.

The Berlin-born enforcer has settled in well with his new team-mates as he has been seen sharing jokes with them.

He is now challenging Derek Boateng for the title of the ‘joker of the team’ with his intermittent submission in broken Twi causing massive laughter.

He is among the 23 players selected by coach Milovan Rajevac to play for the Black Stars at the World Cup this month.

Berlin-born Boateng played for Germany at every level up to and including Under-21, but switched his allegiance, frustrated by a lack of opportunities under Joachim Low.

It sets up a tasty encounter against Germany in Johannesburg on June 23.

Boateng came under fire for his heavy challenge on Germany captain Michael Ballack in the FA Cup final which left the Chelsea star out of the tournament with an ankle injury.

Boateng could face his half-brother Jerome, who plays for Hamburg.

Ghana, who will be without the injured Michael Essien, are in Group D with Germany, Serbia and Australia.
