World Cup 2010: Michael Essien bids Ghana World Cup farewell with support

Published on: 05 June 2010

Injured midfielder Michael Essien joined his Ghana team-mates for their final World Cup friendly against Latvia on Saturday and to bid them farewell ahead of their departure for the tournament in South Africa.

Essien, who plays for English side Chelsea, has been ruled out of the World Cup because of a long-standing knee injury problem.

But he found time to come to the game to wish his team-mates well ahead of the tournament in South Africa as they leave their camping base for the tournament on Sunday morning.

The Chelsea ace was spotted on the Black Stars bench during the game played in the Milton Keynes' MK Dons Stadium.

He was seated next to his friends Stephen Appiah, Derek Boateng, Sulley Muntari and John Paintsil.

This comes after he secured his future with Chelsea by signing a two-year extension to his current contract, leaving him at the club until 2015.

This means by the time the next World Cup comes around in Brazil in 2014, Essien will still playing for Chelsea.
