World Cup 2022: Uruguay coach Diego Alonso confident of progressing from Ghana's group H

Uruguay coach Diego Alonso is confident about progressing from Group H after being drawn against Ghana, Portugal and South Korea in the 2022 World Cup.

The South American will take on South Korea in their opening match before facing Portugal and eventually African giants Ghana in what is expected to be a taciturn affair.

Ghanaians have been set agog amid talks of a massive revenge against the Uruguayans after they denied the country a semi-final berth at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

But Uruguay coach Diego Alonso is unfazed and remains defiant about his country's chances.

“It is very difficult in a World Cup to anticipate what can happen,” he said. "Any rival that touched us was going to be good and in a World Cup you can't choose," he said.

He commented that “it is what we had to do and we face it with great optimism, with great enthusiasm and great desire”, but always “respecting what we have in front of us” and “trusting a lot in what we can do”.

Regarding the selection, he said that "I never saw it as taking a hot iron", it was "a great opportunity and I am an opportunist by nature, so everything I imagined, dreamed, thought and visualized, was what happened", he deepened.

"With the group" you have to "take your hat off" because "they received us with open arms". "Uruguay players have a great identification with the national team and there is nothing more important to them than the national team, the light blue is a priority and they make you feel it at all times", he sentenced.
