It seems that Wu Lei remains the most popular player in China.
The forward has been the subject of major interest from his home country since his move to Espanyol in January 2019.
In a survey carried out by LaLiga on Chinese social network site Weibo, users were asked to choose between Wu Lei and Lionel Messi and the Chinese player is ahead.
More data shows that Wu Lei's first goal for Espanyol generated 14 times the amount of reactions than Messi's goals in China.
It remains to be seen whether Wu Lei can have much of an impact for Espanyol in the remainder of the LaLiga Santander season.
He was one of the Espanyol players to test positive for coronavirus in the last few months.
