Yaw Annor was not celebrated as much as Mbella despite GPL golden boot – Ishmael Addo

Hearts of Oak legend Ishmael Addo has said Yaw Annor did not receive the same amount of attention as Cameroon’s Franck Mbella despite the former AshantiGold striker winning the Ghana Premier League golden boot.

Annor, who has now switched to play for Togo and has earned a debut call-up, beat Kotoko star to the prestigious award last season.

The former Hearts of Oak striker claimed that when Mbella was leading the top scorer's chart, more noise was made than when Annor eventually won the prize.

Annor won the 2021/2022 Ghana Premier League golden boot after scoring twice in Ashanti Gold's 2-2 draw with Bibiani Gold Stars on the final day of the season.

The striker's double brought his tally to 22 goals, passing Asante Kotoko's Mbella, who had 21 during the season.

“Oh, somebody else, not him [Mbella]? [Do] you see what I’m saying? Because the foreigner never did it and a Ghanaian did it, everybody was quiet about it. They were making so much noise because he was a foreigner,” Addo told Joy Sports.

“This is what I’m saying about Ghanaians; they won’t patronize their own people. Give them [Ghanaians] that encouragement, and confidence to be better, but they are rather thinking about somebody who is coming from somewhere and it’s not even a shame to you?”

Annor's 22 goals also tied him with Ishmael Addo for the most goals in a single season in Ghana Premier League history.

Addo is a three-time top-scorer who scored 22 goals for the Phobians in the 2002 league season, breaking a two-decade-old record.
