Former Black Stars midfielder Yussif Chibsah has implored the Ghana Football Association to find a permanent cure to the captaincy issues that have constantly plagued the team.

It is a known secret that Ghana’s failure to annex the 1992 AFCON was partly due to the captaincy row that rocked the team ahead of the final against Ivory Coast.

Nearly three decades on, the issue still persists with defender Jerry Akaminko attributing Ghana’s poor performance at the 2019 AFCON to divisions created as a result of the captaincy change made by coach Kwasi Appiah.

Chibsah says  it is important that the FA nips the issue in the bud else Ghana will have it difficult winning trophies.

He advanced that the leader of the playing body should have the backing of the entire team.

He thus suggested the captain should be elected by the players.

“I think this captaincy issue should be managed. If we’ve been able to have a captain with less issues or no issues at all in the name of Stephen Appiah, it means it can be managed very well. I wouldn’t want to go back to what happened in 1992 and what’s happening with Andre and Asamoah but what I’m saying is the management team and the FA should be able to manage this thing very well”.

“We should have a procedure or guidelines in choosing our captaincy. We should make sure that he is the player’s choice. I believe that the players should vote for their leadership. In that way, we will have less issue. If the players vote, there wouldn’t be any division as we used to have with Asamoah Gyan group as people say and Andre’s group”, he said.
