As the January transfer window comes to a close, reports indicate that FC Barcelona will begin negotiations to renew the contract of veteran midfielder Sergio Busquets.

Despite recent speculation that the 34-year-old had not received an approach from the Blaugrana for a new deal, it seems that the club will be sitting down with Busquets next month to discuss his future at the club.

The Spanish international has been a key player for Barcelona for over a decade and his future at the club has been a topic of much debate in recent weeks. Xavi Hernandez, a former teammate and current Barcelona youth coach, has publicly advocated for the club to renew Busquets’ contract for another year.

However, with the midfielder’s current deal set to expire at the end of the season, both parties have yet to reach an agreement.

In the background, reports have suggested that Busquets has been in talks with MLS outfit Inter Miami, but it appears that Barcelona are determined to keep the midfielder at Camp Nou.

The club will reportedly table a proposal for Busquets next month, though it is expected that the offer will be subject to the club’s current economic conditions, meaning the midfielder may have to take a pay cut to continue with the team.

Barcelona, however, understand the value that Busquets brings to the team, both on and off the field, and respect his right to decide his own future, whether that be continuing with the club or starting a new adventure in the MLS.

Furthermore, it is stated that there could be a possibility that Barcelona provide an option for Busquets to renew for one year but leave for MLS in January 2024, just before the new season in the USA begins.

As the negotiations begin, it is clear that all options are on the table and both parties are committed to having an honest conversation next month to see if an agreement for continuity can be reached. With the transfer window now closed, the focus will shift to the future of one of Barcelona’s most iconic players.
