Uruguay were held to a frustrating drab goalless draw by South Korea in their opening Qatar World Cup campaign as Luis Suarez and Darwin Nunez struggled.

There was ONLY one shot on target as both countries failed to find the back of the net after 98 minutes of play at the Al Janoub Stadium.

The stats didn’t entirely reflect the game but weren’t far off either. Uruguay had the first chance to break the deadlock midway through the first half but Darwin Nunez’s attempt to get contact with the ball inside the penalty box was far off the mark and the chance went begging.

In the 33rd minute, South Korea came close to opening the scoring when Hwang found himself rather in a goalscoring chance but he followed it up with a dreadful effort that went off target.

Some minutes away from the end of the first half, Godin’s header from a corner kick came off the goal post and the goalkeeper was nowhere stopping the header.

Halfway through the second half, former Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani replaced Luis Suarez but the striker would go on and join his team-mates in falling short in the front of goal.

Late in the game, Real Madrid midfielder Federick Valverde tried his luck from range but his effort was denied by the crossbar.

Many fans on the pitch thought he had scored a late-winner because there was no way South Korea’s goalie was stopping that strike, although he did have a good sight of the direction of the ball.
