Three-time world champion Jackie Stewart has advised Lewis Hamilton to leave Formula One.
“He has performed extremely well. Lewis grew up in a poor family, his father had four or five jobs for his son to go-karting until a man called Ron Dennis found him and invited him to McLaren. Lewis has a lot of talent. When the time came to part ways, it was he, not Ron Dennis, who made the decision. Lewis Hamilton saw the potential in the Mercedes and made that choice.
Now he has some problems because the new partner (George Russell) is still faster in qualifying, it’s hard to handle it. But I think it’s time for him to go,” Stewart told The Convex Conversation podcast.
Stewart is confident the seven-time F1 champion will succeed in other areas:
“He has music culture. He loves fashion and the clothing industry would be a great fit. I have no doubt Lewis will be very successful, because he’s made a lot of money, and quite deservedly so – he’s the best driver of his time.
I wish Lewis would go now. It’s a shame he didn’t finish his career at its peak. I don’t think that’s going to happen at the moment though. Nevertheless, it’s wise to stop and not feel the pain of not being able to achieve the same things as before” said Stewart.
