Kyrgios withdrew from the tournament in Atlanta with minutes to go: I can’t do my best, I’m sorry
Kyrgios took to the court to explain to the spectators that he would not be able to perform.
I just want to say that I’m very upset that I won’t be able to compete today. I’ve won this tournament once before and I’m playing at a very high level now, I just wanted to come out and put on a show for you guys, show what I can do. I can’t do my best, I’m really sorry.
I will hopefully be able to continue to perform with Thanasi Kokkinakis.
I hope you won’t be too hard on me. I wanted to come out and see you guys live to say I love you guys and hopefully next year I can play singles and give it my all. I appreciate it.
In singles Kyrgios was replaced by Adrian Mannarino, who eventually defeated Gojowczyk.
“I’m shattered that I’m not able to compete tonight…all I wanted to do was come out here and give you guys a show.”
