Rio Ferdinand urges Ten hag to move for top rated Weghorst alternative in move to boost season

Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester United should have pursued Porto striker Mehdi Taremi before signing Wout Weghorst.

This month, United are looking for a new striker and have held extensive talks with Weghorst, who is currently on loan at Besiktas from Burnley.

Erik ten Hag’s team has already had their first offer turned down as they try to persuade Besiktas to cancel Weghorst’s season-long loan.

But Ferdinand believes United should pursue Taremi, who has 14 goals in 20 appearances for Porto this season, and the 30-year-old impressed for Iran at the World Cup, scoring twice in a 6-2 loss to England.

Taremi’s contract with Porto currently has a €60 million (£53 million) release clause that expires next year.

When asked about United’s pursuit of Weghorst on the YouTube show Vibe with Five, Ferdinand replied, ‘I’d have gone and got Taremi in from Porto.’

Ferdinand also explained why United should prioritize a summer move for Tottenham striker Harry Kane.

‘They’re in a state of flux right now. Man United, where are you going in the summer to find a No.9 to hang our hat on for the next three or four years, to get you 20, 25 goals a season every year?

‘Anything outside of the Premier League is a risk, no matter what level, unless you’re talking about [Kylian] Mbappe. Everything outside of that is a risk.

It’s a lot of money, 100 million or 120 million for [Victor] Osimhen. You’re paying a lot of money for these guys.

‘You’re going to have to pay a lot of money for Harry Kane, but at least you’ll know you’re getting a player who can score 20, 25 goals per season. We can ask, ‘does he suit the game?’ because the man scores 20, 25 goals. Harry Kane should very well move to Manchester United.
