Can Serena Williams beat Osaka?

Osaka played the most difficult match in the tournament in the fourth round.  The Japanese tennis player won a strong-willed victory over Garbine Muguruza.

In the third set, Naomi played two match points against the Spaniard.  With a score of 3:5, she was behind 15:40 on the serve, but in the end, she made an incredible comeback.  Osaka won four points in a row: made two aces, one winner, and attacked Muguruzu to make a mistake.

And then she won all the remaining games, without making a single unforced error in 22 draws.

In the quarterfinals, Osaka defeated Hsieh Su-Wei from Taiwan – 6:2, 6:2.  The game was more like a training session.

Osaka’s winning streak is already 19 matches.  She hasn’t lost since l March of 2020.

Meanwhile, Serena has already played two big matches in the current tournament.  And that two matches have confirmed that the 39-year-old tennis player remains one of the top contenders for the title.

In the fourth round, Williams stopped Aryna Sabalenka. In the third set, the Belarusian tennis player bounced back with a score of 1:4, but at the decisive moment Serena made a break, and then confidently took the game on her serve.

Another test awaited the American in the quarterfinals.  However, the match against Simona Halep was not the most difficult one. Serena won in two sets – 6:3, 6:3.  And then she even said that it was her best match in the tournament so far.

Previously, the tennis players have already met three times in official matches. In 2018, Naomi defeated Serena in the first round of the tournament in Miami and in the final of the US Open.  Serena was able to beat Naomi at the tournament in Toronto in 2019.

In addition, a few weeks ago, a Japanese and an American held an exhibition match in Adelaide – Serena won.  But this game is hardly worth taking seriously.

Stopping Osaka will be really hard.  Osaka is now showing the best tennis on the Australian Open.  So it’s dangerous to bet on Serena to win this time.
