Kei Nishikori improving match to match
Kei Nishikori is back to playing in top tournaments against the world’s top players and he played a great game in the first round of the Madrid Open as he beat Karen Khachanov winning in three sets after losing the first set in a tiebreaker. The Japanese world number 43 has been improving this year and this win will boost his confidence as he looks to reach his best.
Nishikori showed his experience against Khachanov. Even though he was serving just 59% of his 1st serves in, and won 67% of the points behind those serves, Nishikori did a great job on the important points saving two of four break points against him and converting six of seven break points in his favor.
Alexander Zverev to bounce back from a disappointing exit in Munich
The German world number six is not having a good year so far. His form has seen some ups and downs this season and shock exits from tournaments like Munich last week after losing against world number 93 Belarussian Ivashka. Although Zverev won in Acapulco earlier this year, he needs to improve his game against Nishikori.
Zverev had a Bye in the first round In Madrid being seeded number three in the tournament. We think he is a great player and will find his best form quickly. It will be a good test for Alex against the Japanese. He needs to improve his first serve percentage as it was just 59% in his match against Ivashka and with 14 double faults in the match the German number three seed needs major work on his serve.
Key Stats
Kei Nishikori vs Alexander Zverev Prediction
We think Nishikori will be a tough opponent for Zverev in this match. As we covered in the preview in recent matches Nishikori seems to be better than Zverev but one can not count out the German and we expect him to put last week’s defeat behind him and rely on his incredible shot-making to try to overcome his Japanese opponent.
Nishikori is a great defender and even though he doesn’t possess killer groundstrokes like Zverev, his fighting spirit and determination make up for that.
We predict the match to end in three sets.
