Preliminary review and match prediction for Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Arsenal

Wolves have won three straight in the Premier League and scored five goals in their last two matches (over 25% of their goals for the season). However, those came against a Brentford side leaking goals at the moment and Southampton who are generally awful away from home.

This match should be closer than that, the nine games prior all had less than 2.5 goals including games against Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool.

Arsenal will represent Wolves’ toughest test of the year so far and just when Wanderers started scoring goals, they’ve lost Adama Traore to Barcelona. Will Wolves be able to prove they belong in the top four discussion? A win over Arsenal would certainly get people’s attention.

Arsenal have struggled of late, recording no wins in five matches as well as going goalless in their last four. Fortunately for the Gooners only two of these recent matches have been in the league.

Sixth-placed Arsenal have multiple games in hand over fourth-placed West Ham and fifth-placed Manchester United and would overtake both if they won out.

Arsenal didn’t add anyone significant to their playing squad in the transfer window, whilst also releasing exiled striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Barcelona.

Alexandre Lacazette has only three league goals all season so the Gooners will continue to rely heavily on the likes of Bukayo Saka (six goals) and top scorer, Emile Smith Rowe (eight goals).

Both teams have struggled throughout the season to put the ball in the back of the net. Both teams have only conceded three goals in their last six games, and only Manchester City have conceded less than Wolves’ 16 goals.

Romain Saiss might be available for Wolves after his return from the African Cup of Nations. Trincao will likely replace the departed Traore.

Both Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey are available for Arsenal after suspension. Cedric Soares or Takehiro Tomiyasu will take the right back spot with both not fully fit.

As well as Aubameyang, Pablo Mari, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Sead Kolasinac and Folarin Balogun have moved on leaving the Gooners with a thin squad.

Martinelli with four goals so far has bettered his previous two seasons and looks certain to play a lot more football than previous seasons. If he can go on a goalscoring run between now and May the Gooners may have no need to dip into the summers transfer market for a forward.
