Zidane and the Isco situation

One of the individual players who was brought up during Zinedine Zidane's Saturday press conference was Isco, with the Spaniard not having played much so far in 2020/21.

The coach was asked if the player needs to change anything or if the reason for his absence is down to Zidane's preferences.

"What Isco has to do is to keep working," Zidane replied. "It's not a problem of Isco, it's a problem of the coach. He has to keep doing what he's doing. I've insisted on that.

"It's a complicated moment for him, but he has also had good moments. He'll keep showing that he's a good player.

"I won't deny, though, that he's not played much. I have to pick out of all the players and it's true that I've not picked him recently."

The numbers don't lie. So far this season Isco has only played 177 minutes across five games, with his appearances coming against Real Betis, Real Valladolid, Levante, Cadiz and Huesca and with the midfielder having been left out of the Real Sociedad and Barcelona matches and of all three Champions League matches. Only against Real Valladolid and Cadiz did he start.

There is an Isco situation developing. Although, it's also true that Isco has little by little lost prominence since the 2018/19 season.

This has even seen him fall out of the plans for the Spain squad, with Isco not playing for his country since June of 2019.
