Zidane shuts the door on an Odegaard exit

Martin Odegaard may be the sixth-choice midfielder at Real Madrid at this moment in time, but Zinedine Zidane isn't considering letting the Norwegian leave.

Although Luka Jovic has been allowed to return to his former club on loan, joining Eintracht Frankfurt until the end of the 2020/21 season, Zidane is counting on Odegaard and has made this clear.

The directors at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu are also in agreement that a move away wouldn't be the best thing for his development right now. It's also true that some directors don't understand his current reduced role in the squad.

Since the defeat at Shakhtar Donetsk on December 1, the playmaker has only been given five minutes. It's true that he had an injury during that time, but he needs more minutes to show his quality.

That's what he did at Real Sociedad when on loan last season and Odegaard believes he can turn the situation around and be decisive once again. He has been urged not to give up and to work hard and that's what he is doing.

Even though several clubs are following his situation closely, including Real Sociedad, Real Madrid aren't considering letting him go.

The rumours of a return to Real Sociedad are more so the wishes of La Real's supporters than anything concrete.

The Supercopa de Espana presents Odegaard with a fresh opportunity to show what he can do. He has Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Fede Valverde and Isco ahead of him, but Zidane is still counting on him and has said so in press conferences.

When he gets his next chance, he'll look to take it. This is what Modric responded when asked about the Norwegian's situation in his own pre-match press conference ahead of the Thursday night Supercopa de Espana match against Athletic Club.
