Zidane, the Real Madrid players are behind you

Published on: 05 December 2020

As they did at the Camp Nou against Barcelona and in Italy against Inter, Real Madrid's players stood by Zinedine Zidane with their performance against Sevilla, after the Frenchman had come in for heavily criticism due to successive defeats against Alaves and Shakhtar Donetsk.

The game at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan was the first of three tough games in a row in the space of just one week, with tests against Borussia Monchengladbach and Atletico Madrid to come, and Los Blancos managed to come out victorious in Andalusia.

Vinicius Junior got his toe on the end of Ferland Mendy's cross and Bono ended up seeing it hit himself and go into the back of the net to give Real Madrid a hard-fought victory.

Real Madrid's players gave an answer to those who may have thought that they don't back Zidane anymore. Their display against a strong Sevilla side was a vote of confidence in favour of the Frenchman. Zidane's men sent a strong message of being behind their coach until the end.

Casemiro returned to action after being sidelined due to COVID-19 and contributed to Thibaut Courtois keeping a clean sheet in Seville. With him on the pitch, Real Madrid defended much better collectively, as he covered for Nacho Fernandez or Raphael Varane when needed.

After Tomas Vaclik's injury, Bono returned between the sticks and his double howler in the first half almost cost Sevilla, but neither Karim Benzema nor Vinicius Junior could find the back of the net. It was a poor performance from the Sevilla goalkeeper, who failed to save the ball after Vinicius deflected Mendy's cross, as he scored an own goal.

Sevilla produced a brilliant move when Jesus Navas put a cross in Courtois' box and Luuk de Jong attempted a bicycle kick but was unable to beat the Belgian, just before Real Madrid's goal.

Sevilla's congested schedule with successive LaLiga Santander and Champions League games has led to several injuries, with Munir El Haddadi being the latest to pick up a muscle knock. Players and coaches have complained about the number of games they are called to play this season following the COVID-19 pandemic.
