Zinedine Zidane was thoroughly satisfied with Real Madrid's performance as they ran out 2-0 winners over Inter on Wednesday.

Los Blancos were in need of a victory to boost their chances of progression to the knockout stage of the Champions League and achieved it through goals from Eden Hazard and Rodrygo Goes.

"We had a great game from start to finish," Zidane said after the match. "We played seriously and with character. These were three very important points and we were at our best. I'm happy for the players. When they have to perform, they perform."

Hazard opened his Champions League account for Real Madrid, converting a penalty to give the visitors the lead in Milan.

"What Hazard needs is to play and feel good again," Zidane said.

The Real Madrid boss also paid tribute to Diego Maradona after news of his death broke in the hours before Wednesday's game.

"It's an enormous loss for the world of football," Zidane said. "I have him engrained in my head because of what he did at the 1986 World Cup. I was 14 years old... I have no words. We're all very sad."
