Ghana sacked their head coach Chris Hughton following their early Africa Cup of Nations 2023 exit on Tuesday.

Hughton was appointed as the Black Stars’ head coach back in February 2023. He initially joined the national team in February 2022 as technical advisor to the Ghana national team’s coaching staff.

Ghana failed to qualify for the AFCON 2023 round of 16 after finishing third in Group B with having played two draws and suffering a defeat in the opening game against Cape Verde. Egypt and Egypt and Mozambique were also in Group B.

Now the national team is looking for candidates to replace Hughton.

Let’s take a look at the possible names who could replace Hughton at Ghana national team.

Three possible replacement for Ghana national team coach Chris Hughton

Tom Saintfiet

Saintfiet has been a head coach for several national teams including Namibia, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and so on. He has a rich managerial experience as he has been coaching teams since 1997.

The 50-year-old’s latest team was Gambia. He took on the role back in 2018 and left the coaching role on Tuesday, January 23 following the exit from AFCON 2023.

Herve Renard

Renard also has a rich managerial career. He has experience coaching national teams such as Zambia, Angola, Ivory Coast as well as Morocco and Saudi Arabia. He currently coaches France women national team.

The 55-year-old has experience in winning the AFCON as he became champion with Zambia back in 2012 and Ivory Coast in 2015.

Jose Mourinho

Mourinho might be an odd choice as he doesn’t have any experience coaching national teams, but he is an expert at winning trophies. His latest team was AS Roma, where Mourinho won UEFA Europa Conference League.

After managing nine football clubs, maybe it is time for the Special One to take on a new challenge and prove himself in a managerial role as a national team head coach?
