Augsburg are prolific winners at home, but they’ve done well in games against top half teams, while it is they who arrive here with greater momentum. In terms of expected goals, there’s not much difference between the pair, and when we factor in home advantage, it’s easy to conclude that the hosts deserve to be a bit shorter in the betting, and thus playing the home win at the current odds offers some value.

The Augsburg boys secured themselves a much-needed three points last time out, beating Arminia Bielefeld by a goal to nil away from home. That result came after a pleasing draw against Dortmund, so it’s fair to say that Saturday’s hosts have built some solid foundations from which to build.

Their recent form at home is relatively patchy, with a lack of regular wins, but teams certainly haven’t found it easy to go to WWK Arena and come out on top, with only one of the last six visitors returning with all three points. More impressive still is the fact that Markus Weinzierl’s men have held off some strong opposition at this venue in recent times, drawing against Dortmund, Frankfurt and RB Leipzig, while they also beat Union Berlin. Three of those four teams sit above Mainz in the table, while Frankfurt are level on points with Saturday’s visitors.

Bo Svensson’s men were in good form prior to their trip to the German capital last weekend, as they’d won two and drawn one of their last three, but their efforts weren’t good enough to take anything from Union Berlin, who delivered something of a devastating counter-attacking display.

In truth, the men from Mainz have never really got going on the road this term. They’ve won just two out of 12, losing nine of the other ten, conceding a relatively poor 22 goals. OK, such a total isn’t as bad as some of the teams in the division, but it’s bad enough when they’ve scored just 11 times at the other end. The visitors haven’t won a league game away from home since October 2021.
