France v Romania. Gabriele Marcotti’s prediction
The French are overwhelming favorites here and it’s hard to argue with that. They’re the host nation and while Romania have had some decent results in friendlies, this isn’t much of a contest on paper. Still, France have some defensive issues and Romania have shown that when they want to go for it offensively they can (witness the eight goals scored in their last two friendlies). But overall you can’t argue that France are the better side and they would be bitterly disappointed if they failed to come away with anything other than the three points from this opening fixture. The superior quality in depth of the hosts should be enough to see them through, but perhaps not in as good a style as people would expect. On this basis I’d go with France to win and both teams to score, which you can get at a very generous 17/5.
